Anecdote

Nikephoros Phokas the Elder (Greek: Νικηφόρος Φωκάς, Nikēphoros Phōkas) (c. 830-c. 896) was one of the great generals in the service of the Eastern Roman Emperor Basil I.

Descended from the Phokas family, one of the large land-holding families of Anatolia, Nikephoros Phokas rose to the positions of patrikios and domestikos ton scholon. He succeeded in taking Taranto and much of Calabria in 885-886. The successes in the Italian Peninsula opened a new period of Byzantine domination there.

Nikephoros Phokas the Elder was the father of Bardas Phokas the Elder and Leo Phokas the Elder, the grand-father of Nikephoros II Phokas, emperor of the Byzantine Empire.
